Inertia is understandable these days. But Standing Rock's sweeping coalition and today's activists' use of the past should give—dare we say it?—some hope.
At the same time the abstinence-only education is resurging, some legislators, school officials, and teachers are using this cultural moment to bolster classroom offerings that deal with consent and healthy boundaries.
Ultimately, Judge Brett Kavanaugh's nomination is about how his rulings will affect people all over the country, and young people in particular. Every senator must recognize that.
The one-page order keeps in place a lower court ruling that the city of Philadelphia can require social service agencies with city contracts to comply with nondiscrimination laws.
“State politicians, in lock step with the Trump-Pence administration, are bending the rules to take away women’s health and rights any way they can,” said Danielle Wells of Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
What's needed is a massive overhaul so that Catholic communities can be run by trained lay people rather than be ruled by incompetent and sometimes criminal bishops.
"Gillum's upset win is proof positive that there’s a progressive revolution underway, and the old guard establishment can either get on board or get out of the way," Working Families Party National Director Maurice Mitchell said.
For queer Catholics, the only way to establish ourselves as mature adults is through marriage, ordination, or religious vows—all of which are forbidden.
