HB 557 would prohibit the state of Missouri from interfering with a parent’s right to oversee the health and education of their child without demonstrating a compelling governmental interest.

The bill states that the “liberty of a parent to direct the upbringing, education, and care of his or her child is a fundamental right.”

As reported by RH Reality Check:

The broad language of the bill could have significant ramifications beyond reproductive health care. The GOP bill could impact everything from laws governing the vaccination of minors to criminal prosecution of child abuse.
