SB 214 would require insurance carriers or health maintenance organizations to offer coverage for elective abortion by an optional rider for which an additional premium would be paid by the purchaser.
This would actually increase access to abortion in the state as current law under the Public Act of 2013 bans insurance coverage of abortion except through the purchase of optional riders, which insurance companies, HMOs, and employers are not required to provide.
