Queensland’s Tegan Leach and her partner were found not guilty of inducing a miscarriage after one hour of jury deliberation, according to Australian news sources.  The couple, who were being prosecuted under a century old abortion law, were facing a combined decade of jail time for allegedly procuring and ingesting the drug RU 486 in an attempt to abort.

The jury of eight women and four men took less than an hour to reach the unanimous verdict.

They found Tegan Leach, 21, not guilty of procuring her own miscarriage and Sergie Brennan, 22, not guilty of unlawfully supplying drugs to procure an abortion.

There was loud applause and cheering from the public gallery as the verdicts were read out and Judge William Everson told the couple they were free to go.

Despite the not guilty verdict and the groundswell of support surrounding it, and the couple, Queensland Premier Anna Bligh continues to state that there will be no attempt to repeal or amend the 111 year old law as “the majority of MPs do not” support decriminalization of abortion.
