Rewire News Group Staff

"Birth control is preventive health care, and it should be treated as such."

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: These damn nuns!

In the latest Instagram Live with #TeamLegal’s Imani Gandy and Jessica Mason Pieklo, they discuss the recent ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court in Little Sisters of the Poor v. Pennsylvania.

The Affordable Care Act, President Barack Obama’s landmark legislation, guarantees contraceptive coverage at no extra cost or co-pay in most employer-sponsored health plans. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of the nuns, giving any employer with a religious or moral objection the power to deny coverage—even though the employees themselves are the ones who pay for their health plans. Nuns 1; Employees 0.

Rewire.News’ resident legal experts question why the nuns of Little Sisters of the Poor got involved in contraception access in the first place, explain how the fight is a labor issue, and answer questions from the audience.
