Dr. Laura Says You’re Cruel

In an op-ed that ran in the Santa Barbara News Press last month, Dr. Laura—famous for her vitriolic rants and spastic advice—suggested Planned Parenthood is somehow threatening the future well-being of our daughters.Editor's note: This begins our coverage of California Proposition 85, which would prohibit abortions for California teens until 48 hours after their parents have been notified.
"Kids are traumatized by so many things: pimples, fat, learning problems in school, bullying and so forth," Schlessinger wrote. "I don't think it helps our daughters' future well-being to have the memory of terminating the lives of their never-first-born children… But this is exactly what Planned Parenthood and the League of Women Voters want for your daughter: that indelible, ugly memory for the rest of her life."

Come again?
You can easily see that this year's battle against Prop. 85 will be much uglier than our last successful effort to defeat Prop. 73 last year. Responsible medical care providers like Planned Parenthood are clearly under attack. Civic-minded groups like the League of Women Voters are being slandered by people like Dr. Laura. We need your help to fight back.
The "Real Story" about protecting our teens, and keeping them safe from dangerous laws like Prop. 85, is being told by "Real" doctors. Look who's helping us defeat Prop. 85: The California Medical Association, the California Academy of Family Physicians, and the American Academy of Pediatrics—even the California Teachers Association opposes Prop. 85.
The "Real Answer" to teen pregnancy and reducing abortions starts with caring families. Something Dr. Laura can only pretend to know something about. We must emphasize pregnancy prevention through professional counseling and comprehensive, age-appropriate sex education that includes abstinence and birth control.
That's something you can't get from a talk-show host on the radio.
For the sake of argument, Dr. Laura, let's say a teen notifies her parents and they all agree an abortion is the best decision for her. Will you support her having an abortion?
We didn't think so.
