Attorneys for Robert Lewis Dear Jr., the man accused of killing three people in a siege at a Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood clinic, have asked the court for a gag order to limit pre-trial media coverage of the case.
As reported by the Colorado Springs Gazette, Dear’s attorneys in the office of the Colorado State Public Defender filed the motion Monday. If granted, it would place a gag order on all attorneys, law enforcement investigators, and any official connected to the case from speaking to the press while formal proceedings are pending.
Dear’s attorneys argue in the motion that his right to a fair trial has been jeopardized by the extensive media coverage of the shooting.
Dear has not been formally charged yet in the attack. His next court appearance is scheduled for December 9, where he is expected to be formally charged in the shooting that killed three people and injured nine others.
