Failed Michigan City Council Candidate Demands Proof You Needed That Abortion
Not content to simply believe the women who received abortions covered by the local government insurance plan really needed them, a failed city commission candidate is demanding proof.
A Grand Rapids, Michigan city council candidate did not manage to unseat the incumbent she was running against, but that doesn’t mean she’s given up on reforming the city’s wasteful spending. She’s on a mission to prove the city spends more than it should, and one loophole she wants to make sure is totally closed is women who may be getting abortions covered by the city’s insurance plan.
Via MLive:
Rina Sala-Baker said it’s not clear whether the city’s health plan pays for abortion on demand. She plans to demand an answer 7 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, 300 Monroe Ave. NW.
“There is interest in this to be addressed,” said Sala-Baker, who lost a First Ward race to incumbent Walt Gutowski, Jr. “We may be approaching 1,600 (signatures of people who live or work in Grand Rapids). It is an issue of great importance to many people in Grand Rapids.”
City Manager Greg Sundstrom in the past has told MLive that the city’s health plan pays for abortions when medically necessary, the definition of which he said is a private matter between doctor and patient. Sala-Baker wants to require documentation that an abortion was needed to save the mother’s life or that the pregnancy was the result of rape or incest.
As an advocate for cutting wasteful spending, you would think she would have considered the idea that additional investigating and documentation would actually cost the city, not reduce costs. But no expense is too great when it comes to invading a woman’s privacy, right?
