It is hard to believe this is the last issue of The Fallout for 2024. What a year it’s been, too. Together, we survived not one, but two abortion-related cases at the Supreme Court. We absorbed story after story of the medical and emotional trauma patients endured as a result of abortion bans in their states. Garnet Henderson traveled to Brazil and reported on how Brazil’s far-right is importing American-style anti-abortion tactics. Given the results of the November election and this country’s lurch further to the right, Garnet’s reporting is more relevant than ever.

2024 wasn’t all bad by a long shot, though. Hormonal birth control is available over-the-counter for the first time ever, thanks to the hard work of advocates and researchers. Voters across the country turned out for abortion rights and access, no matter the election. And while there’s still plenty of work to do to reform the federal courts, President Joe Biden will leave office having appointed over 230 federal judges, approximately 60 percent of whom are people of color.

2025 is already shaping up to be one helluva year. We know the next presidential administration will be chaotic, and we know that chaos will fall hardest on our most vulnerable communities. We also know that community is exactly the answer to what the year will bring from conservatives. We are stronger together, which is why a central tenet of conservative political leadership is to govern by division. In 2025, we cannot let them. While I don’t know precisely what the year ahead holds, I do know that Rewire News Group will be here, delivering the analysis, commentary, and reporting that cuts through that chaos and noise and that centers communities and lived experiences.
