Rewire News Group is thrilled to announce Mallory Johns will join the organization as its new executive director.

Johns is a dynamic leader with an impressive track record in digital media, audience development, and business operations. She brings a wealth of expertise to Rewire News Group, most recently serving as the Head of Operations for B2C Transformation at the Associated Press (AP). In her role at the AP, Johns was instrumental in executing the organization’s direct-to-audience strategy, leading the successful redesign of apnews.com, which resulted in a significant year-over-year traffic increase. She also spearheaded the launch of a reader revenue program that generated substantial new revenue for the AP.

Prior to her tenure at the AP, Johns also held multiple leadership positions at Vox Media, where she drove growth strategies across the company’s audio, television, and film divisions. Her expertise spans managing internal communications, developing successful marketing initiatives, and scaling audience engagement for renowned brands including Engadget and Popular Science. Johns’ diverse experience across e-commerce, entertainment, news, and tech underscores her versatility and ability to adapt strategies in an evolving media landscape.

“I am incredibly honored to join Rewire News Group at such a crucial moment in our nation’s history,” said Johns. Rewire’s remarkable mission and unwavering commitment to reproductive justice have truly inspired me, and I am thrilled to bring my experience and passion to this extraordinary team. As a leader, I strive to be both the steady presence that a complex and rapidly changing landscape demands and the creative force that drives a bold, transformative vision.”

This moment marks a particularly divisive and challenging time for both media and reproductive rights, making creative, dynamic, and seasoned leadership more critical than ever. With misinformation on the rise, attacks on press freedom increasing, and reproductive rights, health, and justice under relentless assault, Rewire News Group is uniquely positioned to meet these challenges head-on. As the only national nonprofit media organization exclusively dedicated to reproductive and sexual health, rights, and justice, Rewire is a vital source of reporting and commentary that informs, empowers, and drives systemic change.

“Mallory’s innovative thinking and proven expertise in audience engagement and digital transformation are exactly what Rewire News Group needs for this pivotal moment in our organization’s history,” said Andrea Hagelgans, Chair of RNG’s Board of Directors. “As attacks on reproductive freedoms escalate and misinformation threatens to undermine public understanding, Rewire News Group remains a vital source of truth and accountability. Under Mallory’s leadership, I’m confident we will continue to be a trusted voice for our readers on the future of reproductive justice.”

“From the moment I began working with Mallory, one thing became clear immediately: She has grand ambitions that allows others to dream big; a commanding presence that makes one sit up and take note; and enviable organizational skills to keep people focused. She played a crucial role in all the success we have had so far at the Associated Press,” said Saeed Ahmed, Vice President of News for Digital Platforms at the AP.

Since its launch as an independent news outlet in 2012, Rewire News Group’s core purpose has remained unchanged: To combat pervasive disinformation and misinformation about reproductive and sexual health, rights, and justice. From the popular Boom! Lawyered podcast and weekly TikTok series to in-depth, investigative reporting on abortion access in Idaho and a comprehensive 2024 election ballot tracker, Rewire News Group serves as a leading source of information for individuals seeking reliable news and analysis.
