Mississippi Senator Claims All State Abortions Are Done With Coathangers

He says his bill is to stop "back-room" abortions by closing the only clinic in the state.

It appears that Mississippi Senator Dean Kirby is a little confused as to exactly what constitutes a “back room” abortion.  Asked about the new TRAP law that will require all doctors performing abortions in the state to have admitting privileges to a local hospital, Kirby said he believed that none of the doctors “performing abortions at the clinic have the certification required under the bill.”

Sen. Kenny Wayne Jones, D-Canton, asked Kirby whether putting more regulations on the abortion clinic could cause it close, and whether that could then cause women to try to perform their own abortions.

“That’s what we’re trying to stop here, the coat-hanger abortions,” Kirby said. “The purpose of this bill is to stop back-room abortions.”

If he believes the bill will close the only clinic in town, and the purpose is to stop “coat-hanger” abortions, then is Kirby saying that all clinically performed, medically directed abortions are performed with coat hangers?

The bill has passed the senate and now goes to the governor where it is expected to be signed.
