Parents Win Lawsuit Over Faulty Ultrasound
The couple claims that if they had had all of the information, they would have had an abortion rather than given birth.
A couple in West Palm Beach, Florida, have won a $4.5 million lawsuit against a doctor and an ultrasound provider for not catching the fact that their son had no arms and only one leg when they were doing scans on the fetus.
The mother claimed that had they been aware of the deformities, they would not have continued the pregnancy, afraid of the lack of quality life that their child would live.
The $4.5 million settlement is meant to provide the boy, now a toddler, with lifelong medical assistance such as prosthetics, wheelchairs, and adaptive technologies needed to help him live a full and normal life.
According to court reports, the woman had multiple ultrasounds, and in a later one the parents were told “all four limbs were intact.” According to the couple’s lawyer, “That, ladies and gentleman is impossible. It didn’t happen.”
