Got Some Chalk? Change The Message!

The anti-choice aren't the only ones who can take to the streets -- or, in this case, sidewalks.

Do you feel like you may have forgotten something today?  Well, look no further!  It turns out September 8th is actually “National Pro-Life Chalk Day!”

I know, I forgot to mark it on my calendar, too.

But remember, sidewalks are for everyone, and so are messages.  So while anti-choice students may be busy drawing their “3500 baby feet or hearts,” you can be sure to add your own two cents to the mix by re-appropriating some sidewalk jargon to replace it with a pro-choice statement that supports women.

The following are some useful tips proposed by clinic defenders at Dr. LeRoy Cahart’s office in Germantown:

Here are a few examples of some of the re-appropriated messages from Germantown:

“Defend Life” became “Defend Women’s Rights”. “If the Baby was you, what would you do?” turns into “If the baby was yours, what would you do? “”Abortion ends a beating heart” can be changed to “Abortion mends a broken heart.”

Don’t passively allow your campus to become a billboard for anti-choice rhetoric this upcoming Thursday!  Social Justice begins with the people and there has never been a better time to hit the streets, chalk in hand, to proliferate the message that we will continue to defend bodily autonomy and the right to safe and legal abortion access.

Try it yourself if you see chalk drawings on your streets or campuses. And if you don’t, maybe next year.
