- Government officials in Kenya are working to build a latex factory that will manufacture condoms, gloves, and various medical supplies. The country has to rely on imports and donations of latex condoms, which leads to unreliable supply. If the plant succeeds in being built, it will employ 200 people and produce 180 million condoms per year. (Please see this Roundup article regarding men in Kenya washing out condoms for reuse due to short supply.)
- An Indiana senate panel has decided to remove a provision from a piece of legislation that would have required a doctor to tell a woman seeking an abortion that she is at greater risk of breast cancer. Dr. Larry Einhorn, an oncologist testified that, “requiring a physician to inform a woman about the relationship of abortion and breast cancer is illogical and scientifically incorrect.” The legislation in question makes abortion illegal after 20 weeks, unless a woman’s life is in danger.
- The Philadelphia Department of Health has started a new campaign to prevent teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections by making free condoms available by mail for youth ages 11-19. Their website says, “Maybe it’s difficult for you to stop by one of our sites to pick up condoms. Or maybe you’re just shy or feeling weird about picking up condoms.”
- Rick Santorum has set up an exploratory fundraising committee in advance of a 2012 presidential run. He announced the next step in his campaign on Fox News last night, where Greta Van Susteren also grilled him on the statements he made the other week about abortion leading to social security problems.
