- Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer (D) vetoed a bill yesterday that would have prohibited abortion coverage in state health insurance exchanges. He said that it violated the state constitutional right to privacy and access to reproductive health care. The state House may have enough votes to override a veto, but it is doubtful the Senate could come up with the numbers.
- The wife of illegal abortion provider Dr. Kermit Gosnell has been released on bail, but must remain on house arrest. Pearl Gosnell is accused of conspiracy, operating a corrupt organization, and assisting with illegal late-term abortions.
- Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor will visit a unique birthing center / Head Start provider in Washington, DC, next week. “Knowing that Justice Sotomayor is an advocate for maternal health, we are honored to welcome her to our center. DFC is an example of community action at its best; collaboration with multiple partners in targeted communities to produce quality outcomes for children and families,” said Dana Jones, president of the United Planning Organization.
- Could certain strains of HPV, a common sexually transmitted disease known to cause cervical cancer, also increase one’s risk for lung cancer? Researchers are looking into the issue say more studies are needed.
