Kansas Legislators Try to Force State to Drop Planned Parenthood Funding

Kansas lawmakers attempt to stop funding to state Planned Parenthoods, which could force one clinic to close up shop.

Kansas legislators appear to be begging for another veto from Democratic Governor Mark Parkinson. Anti-choice legislators dropped a line item into the state budget reallocating $2.4 million in federal family-planning funding to hospitals and primary or preventative care clinics.  This would leave any reproductive health specific organizations like Planned Parenthood out in the cold.

Planned Parenthood clinics in Hays and Wichita are due to receive at least $232,000 during the next fiscal year, according to the state Department of Health and Environment. Those funds, which pass from the federal government through the state, aren’t allowed to pay for abortions.

Planned Parenthood officials said the Hays clinic may have to close if the state doesn’t provide the funds.

“It’s a particularly misguided effort,” said Peter Brownlie, chief executive officer of Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri. “The funding that we get is funding that can only be used for family planning and is there for preventing unintended pregnancies and abortions.”

Governor Parkinson has until May 28th to veto this line item.  He vetoed a similar item in the budget last year.
