Swiftboat Ad Sponsors Discover Sex Sells
The Annenberg Public Policy Center's Political Fact Check.org reports that The Economic Freedom Fund (aka, front-group where the Texas real estate developer who sponsored the Swiftboat ads questioning Sen. John Kerry's patriotism, and for ads defending ex-Majority Leader Tom Delay is putting his money) is planning to spend even more money in this election cycle. Already they have been active with automated phone calls suggesting that Indiana House candidate Baron Hill "votes to allow the sale of a broad range of violent and sexually explicit materials to minors," according to Annenberg. The blog Taking Down Words, first reported (and offers a recording!) the calls.

As we noted early in September, extreme right wing forces were even using these calls, sometimes known as "push polls" against moderate GOP candidates.
Despite wanting to have an enormous influence on politics by flooding the system with money supporting a minority viewpoint, the Economic Freedom Fund refused to return Annenberg's calls. Typical for these types of organizations whose ideas are so narrow they could not stand the light of day brought about by serious political discourse.
Annenberg notes that the vote they refer to in the "robo call" was something that was widely denounced in both parties because of its infringement on the First Amendment. That should tell you everything you need to know about who is behind these ads, their values, and what they seek to do to our democracy.
