New Resource: Mapping Our Rights

A new online resource recently launched "Mapping Our Rights: Navigating Discrimination Against Women, Men and Families."

This interactive web site unambiguously illustrates the interconnectedness between reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, and the sexual rights of Americans contingent upon where they live. "The objective of this map is to document the vast differences in laws and policies on a state level and show the linkages" between the issues.

Jason Cianciotto, research director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Policy Institute said: "From the right to control our own bodies, to access to fertility technology, to the application of scientifically based approaches to HIV/AIDS, people of every sexual orientation and gender identity share the most basic human concerns and goals."

This clickable online map, a collaboration of Ipas, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, and the SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Health Collective, scores and ranks individual states, as well as the District of Columbia, on laws and policies regarding sexual and reproductive rights.

A state's rating is based on several indicators, including birth control funding, refusal clauses, adoption by same-sex couples, anti-discrimination policies, and more. The information will serve as an ideal resource for advocates, legislators, journalists and others who want "to know whether their state respects their fundamental rights to have a family and control their own reproductive ability or health care."
