Lancet Questions Independence of von Eschenbach

The medical journal The Lancet says FDA Acting-Commissioner Andrew von Eshenbach may not be independent enough to run the FDA. "His failure to issue a decision undermines both his credibility and that of the agency. Von Eschenbach should move quickly to approve Plan B to show he has the independence needed to be an effective leader of the FDA," the editorial said.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and its new ad campaign encouraging women to plan ahead for Plan B and get the medicine before they need it is being called "political" by Wendy Wright of the Concerned Women for America. Former FDA official Dr. Susan Wood explains, "when women need emergency contraception they need it now, not tomorrow, not two days from now." See the new ads at Voice of America.

Demand for emergency contraception has doubled in Canada and has "Reduced costs for abortion, for physician visits … It's substantial," said Dr. Judith Soon of the UBC's faculty of pharmacy sciences. She did not provide specific details of the cost savings because her study has not yet been published.

In addition to politicizing emergency contraception, opponents increasingly are referring to the medication in terms of recreational drugs for women and accusing proponents of trying to get women hooked, making women who want to plan when to bring children into the world sound like addicts or alcoholics.

That's the sort of rhetoric that has many people looking at fringe conservatives in a slightly new way these days, and like a bad hangover starting to ask themselves, what were we thinking? Remember, friends don't let friends drive drunk, educate a friend, share this site.
