WTF Is Going on With the Texas Abortion Ban?

It might be difficult to keep track of what's going on in Texas. We've got you covered.

Buckle up—Jess and Imani are taking you to Texas this week.

The reality in Texas right now is that abortion access is basically a thing of the past, unless you catch your pregnancy very early. It’s in large part thanks to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court (and, of course, the state lawmakers who have been frothing at the mouth to restrict access).

In this week’s episode of Boom! Lawyered, hosts Jessica Mason Pieklo and Imani Gandy unpack the current state of abortion access in Texas (we’re using the word “access” loosely here). They break down what the courts have done over the last few months as cases challenging the law have ping-ponged between the federal district and circuit courts and the Supreme Court. The TL;DR: It’s not great!

While all eyes are on Texas and, of course, the looming Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, you might have missed that the Supreme Court actually heard a different abortion-adjacent case this week: Cameron v. EMW Women’s Surgical Center. Listen to Imani and Jess as they break down the state politics that got us here and the nitty-gritty of the hearing.

And they also bring you a show update: Starting October 25, episodes of Boom! Lawyered will be released Monday afternoon.
