The Supreme Court Could Annihilate ‘Roe v. Wade’ Next Week

The Supreme Court has ensured it's going to be one hell of a term for abortion rights.

Here’s a fun thing that wasn’t on our 2021 bingo card: multiple abortion rights challenges at the Supreme Court. But that happened thanks to Texas!

The Supreme Court decided on Friday to hear not one but two challenges to Texas SB 8, which restricts most abortions in the state after six weeks—well before viability—and puts a bounty in place for anyone who reports a person who helps someone else get an abortion. And they’re hearing the case on November 1—a week from today—like some “gut abortion” telethon starring Justice Kingdom of God and Justice Kegstand.

In this episode of Boom! Lawyered, hosts Jessica Mason Pieklo and Imani Gandy are wading through the fray of all things abortion, Texas, and the Supreme Court to make sense of what has arguably been the most chaotic week in abortion jurisprudence in a while. Jess and Imani break down exactly what’s at stake, the potential outcomes, and what it means for the other abortion case that’s been on the docket all this time: Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which the justices will hear on December 1.

Jess and Imani will be back on the mics after oral arguments next Monday, so stay tuned.
