S 527 was based upon model legislation drafted by Americans United for Life and sought to expand the state’s self-defense law. The bill defines unborn child as the “offspring of human beings from conception until birth.” The bill would not have granted a fetus full legal “personhood” rights but because the bill contains personhood language, it might have been used in the future to restrict access to reproductive health.
South Carolina already allows any person, including pregnant women, to use lethal force to protect themselves thus this bill was unnecessary.
