Current Nebraska law requires general health education in public schools but allows individual school districts to decide what to teach in terms of sex education. LB 619 would have required public schools to provide more comprehensive education about sex and sexually transmitted diseases.
Under LB 619, school districts would have been required to teach from a curriculum that includes: benefits of abstinence in preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, the negative effects of alcohol and drug use in decision-making, information on contraceptive methods, information on sexually transmitted infections and the effectiveness of all methods approved by the FDA for reducing the risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections.
STATUS
LB 619 was referred to the Education Committee. Was indefinitely postponed on April 17, 2014.
