HB 4189 belongs to a package of bills (along with HB 4188 and HB 4190) that permit adoption agencies to refuse service to same-sex or unmarried couples if that goes against their religious beliefs.
HB 4189 amends current Michigan law applying to child placing agencies engaged in adoption services.
The law provides that a child placing agency may not be required to provide adoption services that would conflict with, or to provide adoption services under circumstances that would conflict with, its sincerely held religious beliefs.
The law prohibits the state or a local unit from taking any adverse action against a child placing agency that refuses services due to their religious beliefs.
STATUS
The bill was passed along with HB 4188 and HB 4190.
