Maine Abortion Refusal Clause (§ 1591)
This law was last updated on Dec 6, 2016
Maine law allows physicians, nurses, or other persons, or hospital or health-care facilities to refuse to participate in, or provide, abortion services.
The law prohibits an individual or entity from being held liable or facing any disciplinary or other recriminatory action against them by the State or any person for refusing to participate or provide abortion services.
The refusal of a physician, nurse, or other person to perform or assist in abortion care may also not be a basis for discrimination in employment or education.
The law does not require refusing entities or individuals to provide notification or referrals to patients seeking abortion services.
Similar to Maine Revised Statutes Title 22, section 1592.
