Louisiana Bill Regarding Qualifications of Physicians Who Perform Abortions (HB 488)
This law was last updated on Feb 27, 2017
HB 488 would provide that no person shall perform or induce an elective abortion unless that person is a physician licensed to practice medicine in Louisiana and is board-certified or board-eligible in obstetrics and gynecology or family medicine.
Current law only requires that a physician be licensed to practice medicine in Louisiana and be currently enrolled in or have completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology or family medicine.
The bill was signed into law by Gov. John Bel Edwards (D) on May 19, 2016.
***The Center for Reproductive Rights filed a lawsuit on behalf of several abortion providers challenging seven abortion restrictions (HB 1081; HB 1019; HB 815; SB 33; HB 386; HB 488; and HB 606). The state has agreed to delay enforcement.***
