Gaiutra Bahadur is a freelance journalist currently based in
London. A 2008 Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, she writes about a
variety of issues, including the culture and politics of international
migration. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, The Nation, Ms.
Magazine and salon.com,
among other publications. She worked as a staff writer for U.S.
newspapers for a decade and covered the war in Iraq for The
Philadelphia Inquirer and Knight Ridder in 2005. Gaiutra was born in
Guyana and moved to the United States with her family at the age of
six. Her essay about growing up immigrant in New Jersey appears in
"Living on the Edge of the World," an anthology published by Simon
& Schuster in 2007. She is at work on a book about Indian women who
replaced slaves on British sugar plantations in the Caribbean.
