After allegedly assaulting a reporter Wednesday, Gianforte won the race with 50 percent of the vote to Democrat Rob Quist’s 44 percent.
"This is not just Montana’s race," said Betsy Swartz of Big Sky Rising, a grassroots organization backing Democrat Rob Quist in Thursday's special election for a U.S. House seat. "The entire country is watching us and helping us be successful.”
Montana's Greg Gianforte, who is running against Rob Quist for the state's only seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, has a history of donations to political candidates with deep ties to white nationalist groups and anti-government extremism.
With less than ten days left in the election, most observers argue that turnout and voter enthusiasm will decide the race.
