On May 3, Angel Dillard is set to stand trial in federal district court in Kansas for alleged violations of the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act. According to the Department of Justice’s charges against Dillard, after Scott Roeder’s May 2009 assassination of Wichita, Kansas, abortion provider Dr. George Tiller, Dillard began sending a series of threatening communications to another abortion provider, Dr. Mila Means. Means was harassed by Dillard and others out of providing abortions in the area.
But as this timeline shows, and with thanks to Robin Marty for the additional research help, anti-abortion violence in Wichita long predates Dillard. The city remains a focal point for the most radical elements of the anti-choice movement.
Correction: A version of this timeline incorrectly identified Julie Burkhart as a physician. It has been updated to clarify her position as CEO and founder of the Trust Women foundation. It has also been updated to more accurately reflect Dr. Mila Means’ plans regarding providing abortions in Wichita.
