Discussion of Adoption Cut From Live Action Video Footage at Planned Parenthood

Editing once more creates an entirely different picture than the real encounter.

The debate over PRENDA — the Prenatal Non-Discrimination Act — may be done, but the push against Planned Parenthood affiliates by Live Action activists continue on. The anti-choice actions group lead by James O’Keefe protege Lila Rose has shown once more that they have learned all of her mentor’s tricks, as a new and heavily-edited video shows an entirely different conversation than the one that full footage proves took place.

Live Action’s new New York video, part two in their series that is supposed to prove that Planned Parenthood “promotes” sex selection abortion, snips a 30-minute encounter into a tidy 7-minute package that allegedly shows a practitioner willingly helping a woman arrange for a future abortion of a likely female fetus.

But what was left on the cutting room floor, according to Media Matters, is the counselor raising the possibility of adoption, questioning whether she’s certain she wants to terminate, and the question of whether they would provide a “friendly” Obstetrician to help her out.

  • The employee asked the activist, “And have you guys — you know, ’cause we’re required to discuss all of the, you know, a patient’s options — is adoption something that you were interested in considering?” [53:45]
  • After the activist claimed she used a test designed to identify the sex of a fetus early in a pregnancy, the employee responded, “I’m also a social worker and not a medical provider, so, you know, so from, you know, my role here, that isn’t something I’ve ever heard of.” [40:10]
  • The employee asked the activist, “And have you decided that you — you know, have you definitely decided that you would like to terminate your pregnancy?” [38:40]
  • The activist asked whether Planned Parenthood had an OB/GYN it would “specifically … recommend” who “would be understanding of my situation.” The employee responded, “I really — no, I don’t really know of an OB/GYN prenatal doctor who — I can tell you that they do prenatal care. I can tell you that they, you know, that they would be able to do these tests for you. I can’t really say that there’s going to be someone in particular who is going to be necessarily understanding. Most OB/GYN doctors, hopefully, you know, are understanding that it’s a woman’s choice to decide if she’s interested in adoption, if she’s interested in prenatal care, if she’s interested in terminating. And whatever somebody’s decision is for having an abortion is really her choice.” [49:30]

The tactics aren’t at all surprising, as these are the same shenanigans that eventually were uncovered in the O’Keefe “ACORN” schemes as well.

I watched the edited version of the video earlier today, and was surprised that the group believed even the short, doctored clip was somehow a smoking gun. The counselor looked highly uncomfortable with the discussion, and the focus on CSV as a means of testing for sex early seemed more like a ploy to get her in for prenatal care than anything else, since it can’t be done without a doctor’s order (whereas if she waited for an ultrasound, she wouldn’t necessarily need to see a doctor, assuming this were a real situation).

If the second video is already so heavily skewed in order to try and support their narrative, one can only wonder how edited a third installation would be?
