ACLU, Kansas Continue Battle Over Abortion in Insurance

The group is arguing against a blocked injunction on banning insurance coverage for abortion procedures.

After having its initial injunction request denied, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is requesting one more chance to issue evidence for an injunction against a new Kansas law that would ban insurers — even private insurers — from covering abortions.

The ACLU asked U.S. District Judge Wesley Brown on Thursday to let it correct an evidence problem in an affidavit and to grant its motion for a preliminary injunction.

If the temporary injunction is denied, the ACLU says it is requesting an expedited schedule for discovery and summary judgment on the law’s constitutionality.

If it is not blocked, the Kansas law would be the first in the country to force insurance companies  not to cover abortions even if no taxpayer money is involved in the coverage costs.
