Abortion

Is North Carolina Short for an Anti-Abortion Veto Override?

After the governor vetoed an abortion waiting period, it was assumed the legislature would override the veto. Was that assumption wrong?

When Democratic Governor Bev Perdue vetoed the “Abortion-Woman’s Right to Know” act, a bill that would have put a waiting period in place for obtaining an abortion and provide women with “risks and alternatives” to abortion, it was assumed that like many of the north Carolina Democrat’s vetoes, it would get overturned by the legislature.  But now, it appears the anti-choice faction may be just one or two votes shy.

Via the Lincoln Tribune:

After hours of emotional debate on the House floor, sponsors managed to carve off support form three Democrats…the tally was one vote shy of a 72 vote majority needed to supersede a veto.

The anti-choice politicians are trying to flip one more Democrat, finding a target in a rep who missed the previous vote due to an excused absence.  If he holds true to the governor, the veto will stand.
