Thank Goodness Gender Rating Is Over So We Can Pay For Abortion Coverage

Even if the Affordable Care Act stays in place, Republicans already found a way to make women pay more.

One of the great advantages to the passage of the Affordable Care Act was supposed to be the elimination of gender rating — the method through which insurers charged women more for health care relative to men on the assumption that women will use more health care services (cause, you know… we can get pregnant). In fact, on the individual market a woman is likely to be charged one and a half times as much as a man in the same physical condition.

Under the Affordable Care Act, being a woman is no longer considered a pre-existing condition, and women would no longer have to pay more than men for coverage.

Unless they want an abortion.

Thanks to the numerous states, such as Kansas, who are eliminating abortion coverage from insurance plans in an attempt to save people who are against abortion from “subsidizing” other women’s abortions (which is a false claim in any case), many people are now being offered the chance to get “abortion coverage” on the side for $7 a month.

Of course, a man isn’t going to need this side insurance.  Just a woman.  And all women should probably get it, after all, it’s just like having a spare tire — you never know when you might need it.

So, welcome back, gender rating.  It looks like we’re still going to have to pay more for insurance for being female whether we want to or not.
