We’re Riding High With These Recent Wins 🎢

Doesn’t it feel good to be hopeful? Vice President Kamala Harris has been named the Democratic presidential candidate, which we consider a potential step forward in our nation’s reproductive health, rights, and justice movement.
Not only is Harris unafraid to say the word “abortion,” but she has a proven track record in advocating for reproductive rights. These are just two reasons that Rewire News Group’s first-ever (!!) summer intern Lorien Tyne is feeling optimistic. “For the first time in my lifetime, the Harris nomination presents a real choice to move forward, and I hope the country takes it,” Lorien wrote in a recent article for Rewire News Group.
Harris’s nomination isn’t the only win we’re celebrating this month. Join us as we rejoice in these positive updates:
Arizona voters will have the chance to codify abortion rights into the state’s constitution this fall.
After having a record 577,971 signatures verified, Arizona for Abortion Access succeeded in bringing an abortion rights ballot initiative to voters in the battleground state this fall. Arizonans have the opportunity to restore major reproductive rights with Proposition 139, which will guarantee a fundamental right to abortion care up to the point of fetal viability, which is around 24 to 26 weeks of pregnancy (and beyond, should the life or physical or mental health of the pregnant person be in jeopardy).
New York moves forward with keeping its expansive Equal Rights Amendment on the November ballot.
If codified, New York’s would be the first state constitution to count discrimination based on a person’s pregnancy or pregnancy outcome as sex discrimination, as Lorien reported in another detailed article for Rewire News Group.
Abortion rights advocacy group Free & Just has taken their fight on the open road in a national bus tour.
Launching in Madison, Wisconsin during the Republican National Convention, the Ride to Decide tour will roll through more than 20 cities before its grand finale in Chicago for the Democratic National Convention.
At Rewire News Group, we’ve ridden the rollercoaster of reproductive and sexual health, rights, and justice news for well over a decade. It’s all the loops, twists, and turns that have made us the experts we are today.
With reproductive rights in the news now more than ever, readers everywhere will continue to need that expert reporting.
