Pro-Romney PAC Attacks Gingrich On Abortion
The battle to win Florida gets even hotter as abortion becomes a key issue for the two candidates.
Frontrunner Mitt Romney has been taking a lot of criticism from challengers for his evolving positions on abortion since he began running for the Republican presidential nomination.
But now a pro-Romney PAC in Florida is trying to turn the tables on former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, bringing his”abortion-supporting” past to the forefront, too.
Via The Miami Herald:
It’s a two-man Republican presidential race in Florida, if the mail from the pro-Mitt Romney Restore Our Future PAC is any indication. It’s dropping two mail pieces on Florida Republicans that savage former House Speaker Newt Gingrich for, well, you name it.
…
“A conservative would not give 60 million taxpayer dollars a year to the United Nations Population Fund, which supports China’s brutal one-child policy,” says one mail piece.
The accusation is eerily reminiscent of that of Iowa Pro-Life Action, which was pushing the same meme prior to the Iowa caucus.
But Gingrich, meanwhile, is still attacking Romney on abortion rights in South Carolina. The Washington Post reports:
Whatever Gingrich wants to call it, this is a negative ad.
“What happened after Massachusetts moderate Mitt Romney changed his position from pro-abortion to pro-life?” a female narrator asks as a picture of an unhappy-looking Romney fills the screen and spooky music plays. “He governed pro-abortion.”
She continues: “Romney appointed a pro-abortion judge, expanded access to abortion pills, put Planned Parenthood on a state medical board but failed to put a pro-life group on the same board. And Romney signed government-mandated health care with taxpayer-funded abortions. Massachusetts moderate Mitt Romney: He can’t be trusted.”
Gingrich has admitted that without a win in South Carolina, he will likely consider ending his campaign, making the Florida attacks from Romney’s PAC somewhat useless in the long run.
