- Reports of men washing condoms for reuse in Kenya highlight the need for better distribution and education about HIV prevention. Men who reuse condoms say that the prophylactics are too hard to obtain – one walks five kilometers to a health center – to only use once.
- Governor Bob McDonnell has signed the bill that allows abortion clinics to be regulated as hospitals, as was expected. The Virginia Department of Health will write the “emergency” regulations by September, and the rules are expected to go into effect January 1, 2012.
- North Dakota is pushing abstinence-only-until-marriage legislation. Supporters of the bill say the intent is “to prevent teachers from discussing contraception,” although the bill does not explicitly forbid talk of contraception. The bill has passed the Senate, and is expected to be taken up in the House.
- NPR’s Tell Me More recently looked at a study by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and the National Center for Transgender Equality that examined discrimination in the lives of transgendered persons. A shocking statistic came out of the study – nearly 41% of those surveyed has attempted suicide.
